The personal statement is a significant part of your application. It provides other people with important information about you as a candidate for an undergraduate research position. It provides potential mentors and the selection committee with an impression of you as an individual. It is a way to measure your writing ability.(也是寫作能力的表現(xiàn)機會)
It states clearly your personal and professional goals and how participation in this program will help you achieve them. The personal statement can be used to determine your enthusiasm for participating in the program, your enthusiasm for the field, your maturity, your creativity, and your curiosity.
The people who will read your statement include potential mentors and evaluators who will recommend student selection.
There is no general recipe which, if followed to the letter, will guarantee a good personal statement. A good statement will anticipate and answer questions that prospective mentors or evaluators might ask about you. The questions below are not meant to be exhaustive or a check list. They are posed to stimulate your thinking about what you want to do and why you want to do it.
Your personal statement should clearly present how and why you became interested in a particular area of research and the steps you have taken to foster your interests. The people who read your personal statement should see your growth and interest over a period of time.
Some questions to consider when writing your personal statement:
1. Why are you applying? In what area of study do you want to specialize? What are your research interests?
2. What are your career goals (both short- and long-term)?
3. What makes you a special and unique applicant? What are you studying as an undergraduate? What special preparation did you receive?
4. What about your extracurricular activities? Talk about your accomplishments and responsibilities. What are your strengths and weaknesses?
5. What are some of the problems you have had (personal, academic, research) and how did you resolve them? Make any explanations of problems positive and always articulate resolution of the problems. If you have any challenging or special experiences, describe them. These are the things that make you stand out and stay in the minds of the selection committee.
6. What do you know about the field? How did you get your information?
7. Do you have any work experiences that have contributed to your growth? Describe them.
8. What skills do you have that will help you succeed?
9. What specific areas of research conducted at Caltech (or one of the exchange universities) are you interested in? Are there particular faculty members whose work especially appeals to you?
