What characteristics will best describe a successful business in the next decade? Why?
Over the next ten years, successful businesses will continue to be built on the most important factor in business - customer satisfaction. I believe that no matter what changes happen over the next ten years, whether they are technological, societal or physical format changes, the basic idea of satisfying the customer will remain as the key element for operating a successful business. Besides this fundamental certainty, over the next ten years businesses must become more adept at satisfying individual customer needs rather than simply marketing to the masses. Consumers are becoming increasingly demanding as competition increases and market segments become more and more fragmented. In the short-term, mass marketing with a unique product can be successful, but success always invites competition. As technology advances, most product innovations or service ideas can be fairly easily copied in a very short time. Businesses that are successful in the future will find that their competitive edge must come through something that cannot easily be duplicated by the competition. Managers over the next ten years must have a broad-based knowledge of the worldwide business environment in order to run a successful business. Knowledge will be the key to success in the future as manufacturing know-how becomes less important due to advances in technology. Businesses, and therefore the managers that run them, must be flexible in the face of an increasingly rapidly changing worldwide environment. A truly global marketplace is evolving, requiring a type of management that never stops learning. To satisfy customers, successful businesses over the next ten years must be willing and able to move away from older business models that may have been successful in the past but have become irrelevant due to changes in the competitive environment. Adapting and changing to meet the consumer's ever more demanding needs will be the key to success and survival for businesses over the next ten years.
