I held up my little plastic wand and blew breath through its hoop-end, and bubbles appeared. Esperanza, a little Guatemalan girl, stopped whimpering and stared with fascination. After I spoke words of comfort to her in Spanish, she grew even more intrigued. A day later she had her appointment for surgery at the hospital there in Guatemala. I scrubbed in for Esperanza’s surgery and sat beside her in the recovery area. When her eyes fluttered open and she began to cry, I again opened my bottle of bubbles. At the moment when she reached her hands up at my bubbles, I knew more assuredly than ever that I would reach for a career in medicine. Although I had been fascinated by physicians since my own childhood, it was Esperanza who showed me the specific rewards the medical profession could offer me. Today, I view medicine as the only way for me to couple science with my intense compassion for humanity -- to improve the lives of others like her.
Although I was in Guatemala when I met Esperanza, an equally powerful series of events occurred much closer to home. One of my best friends was diagnosed with metastatic ovarian cancer, one month before her senior prom and one year before she would die. I attended classes on the same campus where she underwent treatment, where she fought in vain for her life. Although plagued by the intangible emotional anguish of watching a close friend endure what I had only seen during rounds with oncologists, I also immediately became insatiably curious about the clinical aspects of the cancer. Part of me felt that I should avoid asking too many questions about my friend's illness, her drugs, and her operations, and in the end, I simply hoped for her to be free from pain. Ever since, however, my passion for studying cancer has grown and manifested itself in many ways.
One opportunity to explore and study cancer more arose during my time caring for a baby who had a rare form of leukemia. Though her cancer seemed terminal, Hannah survived thanks to an experimental treatment, coupled with the power of hope and positive thinking. Hannah’s survival evoked in me a great sense of respect for the field of research and its integral role in the evolving treatment of patients.
In medical school, I hope to build on my research to date in the field of cancer treatment, so that I can better explore the disease that afflicted my friend and so many others. Above all, I pursue a career in medicine because it will allow me to draw on my intense compassion for other human beings and improve the quality of their lives. I look forward to my medical education as the next step.
